Egmont or Egmond, Lamoraal, Graf van 1522-68
Flemish soldier and Prince of Gavre

Born in the castle of La Hamaide, Hainault, he accompanied Emperor Charles V on many campaigns, notably against the French at St Quentin (1557) and Gravelines (1558), for which he was made Governor of Flanders and Artois. He opposed Philip II of Spain's Catholic policy, thus becoming a popular hero, but when he later broke with the Prince of Orange, he was executed as a traitor.
