Eichendorff, Joseph, Freiherr von 1788-1857
German poet, novelist and critic

Born near Ratibor, he studied law and became a government official. His poems were set by a number of composers, including Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn, and reveal his profound veneration for the divine gifts of natural beauty. His novels include the idyllic Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (1826, Eng trans Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing, 1955) and Das Marmorbild (1826, 'The Marble Statue'). He is regarded as one of the most important Romantic lyricists writing in German, known for Gedichte (1931) and the epic Robert und Guiscard (1955).
