Einhard or Eginhard c.770-840
Frankish historian

Born in East Franconia, he was sent to the court of Charlemagne, where he became a pupil of Alcuin and a favourite of the emperor, and of his successor Louis I, the Pious. For years lay abbot of various monasteries, he ultimately retired to Mühlheim. His Life of Charlemagne (c.820) is the great biographical work of the Middle Ages. He also wrote Annales Francorum, covering the period 741-829, and 62 Epistolae.
