Elizabeth, known as the Winter Queen or the Queen of Hearts 1596-1662
Queen of Bohemia
The eldest daughter of James VI and I of Scotland and England and Anne of Denmark, she married Frederick V, Elector Palatine, in 1613. Intelligent and cultured, she enlivened the court at Heidelberg by her presence and, with Frederick's championship of the Protestant cause and his brief, unhappy winter as King of Bohemia, she became a potent symbol of the Protestant cause in Europe. Driven from Prague and deprived of the palatinate by Maximilian I of Bavaria, the couple lived in exile in The Hague with their numerous children, continually beset by financial difficulties. Frederick died in 1632, Elizabeth outliving him by 30 years. Her son, Charles Louis, was restored to the palatinate in 1648, but his mother remained in Holland. She died in London while on a visit to her nephew, the newly restored Charles II of England.
