Elphinstone, William 1431-1514
Scottish churchman and statesman
Born in Glasgow, he was ordained priest, spent five years in France, and lectured on law at Paris and Orleans. He was appointed Bishop of Ross in 1481, and of Aberdeen in 1488. Under James IV he was ambassador to France (1491), and Keeper of the Privy Seal from 1492. It was chiefly through his influence that the first printing-press - that of Walter Chepman (c.1473-1538) and Andrew Myllar - was established in Scotland (1507). The University of Aberdeen (King's College) was founded by him in 1494. His Breviarium Aberdonense (1509-10) was printed by Chepman and Myllar.

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
