Ernest Augustus 1771-1851
King of Hanover

Born at Kew, the fifth son of George III, he was educated at the University of Göttingen. He then entered the Hanoverian army and was created Duke of Cumberland (1799). He married Princess Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1815, and in 1837 under Salic law succeeded his brother William IV of Great Britain as Ernest I of Hanover. His policy was reactionary, but in 1848 he saved his throne by the unwilling concession of liberal reforms. He was succeeded by his son, George V.
