Espronceda, José de 1808-42
Spanish poet and revolutionary

Born in Almendralejo, Estremadura, he travelled widely in Europe, partly to escape persecution for his liberalism, and partly in pursuit of Teresa Marcha, who is commemorated in his unfinished poem, El Diablo mundo (1841, 'The Devil of the World'). He wrote romantic poems in the Byronic manner, and is considered by some the greatest lyricist of his time.
