Eugenius III, originally Bernardo Paganelli 12th century
Italian pope

Born near Pisa, he was a disciple of Bernard of Clairvaux and became a Cistercian monk, being appointed pope in 1145. His predecessor (Lucius II) had died during a rebellion against the papacy in Rome, and so Eugenius was obliged to flee to Viterbo immediately upon his election. Soon after his return he was again driven out by a revolt initiated by Arnold of Brescia and turned his attention to promoting a second crusade in France.
