Eusebius of Nicomedia d.342AD
Syrian prelate

Born probably in Syria, he was Bishop first of Beryta (Beirut) in Syria, and then of Nicomedia. He defended Arius at the Council of Nicaea (AD325) and afterwards became the head of the Arian party. Exiled to Gaul for his views, he came back in 328 and influenced the Emperor Constantine I, the Great, to move towards Arianism, and baptized him in 337, just before Constantine died. He had also been responsible for the deposition of Athanasius in 335. In 339 he was appointed Patriach of Constantinople, and enjoyed the patronage of the Emperor Constantius I.
