Ferdinand VI 1713-59
King of Spain

He was born in Madrid, the son of Philip V, whom he succeeded in 1746. Gloomy and mediocre, he did appoint very capable ministers, and was a patron of art and scholarship. He did his best to keep Spain neutral in European conflicts following the disadvantageous Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748). He became acutely depressed during the last years of his life.
