Ferrier, James Frederick 1808-64
Scottish philosopher

Born in Edinburgh, he became Professor of History at Edinburgh (1842) and Professor of Moral Philosophy at St Andrews (1845). His book The Institutes of Metaphysic (1854) was the first important work of the British Idealist (neo-Hegelian) movement. He introduced the term 'epistemology' into English and propounded also an 'agnoiology', or theory of ignorance.
