Fleury or Flory, André-Hercule de 1653-1743
French prelate and politician

He was born in Lodčve. As a young priest, he entered court service (1679), became almoner to Louis XIV (1683), and Bishop of Fréjus (1698). Tutor to the future Louis XV from 1715, he replaced the Duc de Bourbon as Chief Minister (1726) and was made a cardinal, effectively controlling the government of Louis XV until 1743. Through skilful diplomacy he limited the involvement of the French in the War of the Polish Succession (1733-38), restoring the country's prestige as a mediator. His moderation gave France the stability her finances needed, and he carried out legal and economic reforms that stimulated trade.
