Fragonard, Jean Honoré 1732-1806
French painter and engraver

Born in Grasse, he studied under François Boucher and Jean Chardin in Paris, and gained the Prix de Rome in 1752. He painted, with luscious colouring and a loose touch, genre pictures of contemporary life, the amours of the French court (notably The Progress of Love, 1770, for Madame du Barry), and landscapes foreshadowing Impressionism. His Bacchante endormie ('The Sleeping Baccante'), La Chemise enlevée and other works are in the Louvre, Paris, and he is also represented in the Wallace Collection, London. The French Revolution ruined his career.
