Fredrik I 1676-1751
King of Sweden

Born in Kassel, Germany, he fought for England in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13). As Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel, he married (1715) Ulrika Eleonora, the younger sister of King Karl XII and future Queen of Sweden. In 1720 his wife abdicated the throne in his favour, under a new constitution which deprived the Crown of most of its authority. He spent most of his time on hunting and love affairs, leaving the government to his chancellor, Arvid Horn. He died childless, and was succeeded by Adolf Fredrik.
