Gadsden, James 1788-1858
US soldier and diplomat

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he served in the War of 1812 and against the Seminoles. He spent a decade as a railroad company executive and was a continuing advocate of a transcontinental railroad along a southern route. In 1853 he was appointed Minister to Mexico, and negotiated the purchase (the 'Gadsden Purchase') of part of Arizona and New Mexico for railway construction.
