Gaius fl.AD130-180
Roman jurist

His Institutes formed the basis for those of Justinian and are the only substantial texts of classical Roman law that have survived. His other works were largely used in the compilation of the Digest. The Institutes, lost until Barthold Niebuhr (1776-1861) discovered a manuscript at Verona in 1816, have been repeatedly edited, and a fragment of an older manuscript was printed in Oxyrhynchus Papyri (vol 17, 1928).
