Galerius, properly Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus d.311AD
Roman emperor

Born near Serdica, Dacia, he rose to a high rank in the army. He was made Caesar by Diocletian (AD293), and on Diocletian's abdication (305) became, with Constantius Chlorus, joint ruler of the Roman Empire, Galerius taking the eastern half. When Constantius died in York (306) the troops in Britain and Gaul transferred their allegiance to his son, Constantine I, the Great, but Galerius retained the east until his death. Christian tradition presented him as a persecutor of their faith, though in his last year he granted full toleration throughout the empire.
