Garnett, Edward 1868-1937
English writer and critic

Born in London, the son of Richard Garnett, as a publisher's reader he fostered the careers of many literary figures, including Joseph Conrad, John Galsworthy and D H Lawrence. He was the author of the set of critical essays Friday Nights (1922). He also wrote plays, including The Breaking Point (1907) and The Trial of Jeanne d'Arc (1912). His wife Constance (née Black, 1862-1946) was a distinguished translator of Russian literature.
