George I 1845-1913
King of Greece

The second son of King Kristian IX of Denmark, he was born in Copenhagen. He served in the Danish navy and on the deposition of King Otto of Greece (1832-62) he was elected king (1863) by the Greek national assembly. He married (1867) Grand Duchess Olga, niece of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. His reign was a formative period in Greece's emergence as a modern European state. It saw the consolidation of Greek territory in Thessaly and Epirus, and the suppression of a Cretan insurrection (1896-97). Involved in the Balkan War of 1912-13, he was assassinated at Salonika, and succeeded by his son Constantine I.
