George II 1890-1947
King of Greece

The son of Constantine I and grandson of George I, he was born in Tatoë, near Athens, and succeeded to the throne on his father's second abdication (1922), but was deposed (1923) by a military junta. Restored to the throne by plebiscite (1935), he worked closely and controversially with his dictatorial Prime Minister, Yanni Metaxas. When Greece was overrun by the Germans (1941) after successfully resisting the Italian invasion of 1940-41, he withdrew to Crete and then to England. In 1946 he wasrestored to the throne, again by plebiscite. He was succeeded by his brother Paul I.
