George, Stefan 1868-1933
German poet

Born in Büdesheim, near Bingen, he edited (1892-1919) Blätter für die Kunst, a journal devoted to the work of a group of advanced poets and writers to which he belonged. He wrote lyric verse in Hymnen (1890, 'Hymns'), Der siebente Ring (1907, 'The Seventh Ring') and Der Stern des Bundes (1914, 'The Federal Star'), which shows the influence of the French Symbolists and the English Pre-Raphaelites. He also translated the works of Baudelaire, Shakespeare and Dante. In his poems he dispensed with punctuation and capitals. In Das neue Reich (1928, 'The New Reich') he advocated a new German culture, not in accord with that of the Nazis.
