Germanicus Caesar 15BC-AD19
Roman soldier

Son of Nero Claudius Drusus, and of Antonia, daughter of Mark Antony and niece of Augustus, he was adopted by the emperor Tiberius. In AD13 he was appointed to command the eight legions on the Rhine, and two years later he marched to meet Arminius, whom he overthrew in two desperate battles. Tiberius, jealous of his popularity, sent him to the East in AD17, appointing Calpurnius Piso as viceroy of Syria, in order secretly to counteract him. Germanicus died at Ephidaphnae, near Antioch, probably of poison. His wife, Agrippina, the Elder, and two of her sons were eventually put to death, but the third son, Caligula, survived to become emperor. The notorious Agrippina, the Younger, was his daughter.
