Gloucester, Gilbert de Clare, 9th Earl of 1291-1314

Also 10th Earl of Clare and 8th Earl of Hertford, he was the son of Gilbert de Clare, 8th Earl of Gloucester. His younger sister Margaret was married to Piers Gaveston, the favourite of Edward II, and after Gaveston's execution Gloucester acted as mediator for the barons with the king. He was killed in the English defeat by the Scots at Bannockburn (1314). Another sister, Lady Elizabeth de Clare (c.1291-1360), endowed Clare College, Cambridge (1336).
