The third son of George V, he was educated privately and at Eton. He became a captain in the 10th Hussars and was created Duke of Gloucester (1928). In 1935 he married Lady Alice Montagu-Douglas-Scott, and they had two children: Prince William (1941-72) and Prince Richard, who succeeded him. He was Governor-General of Australia (1945-47).
