Granby, John Manners, Marquis of 1721-70
English soldier
He was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire. MP for Grantham in 1742, he served on the Duke of Cumberland's staff. As colonel of 'The Blues' and second-in-command of the British horse at Minden (1759), he witnessed the failure of Lord George Sackville (1716-85) to lead the cavalry into action, which earned his commander the contemptuous title of 'The Great Incompetent'. In 1760 Granby redeemed the cavalry's reputation with the spectacular victory of Warburg. He became 'the mob's hero', in Horace Walpole's sneering phrase, and in 1763 was appointed Master-General of the Ordnance, succeeding the aged John, 1st Earl of Ligonier (1680-1770) as Commander-in-Chief in 1766.

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
