Halévy, Ludovic 1834-1908
French playwright and novelist

He was born in Paris, the son of the writer Léon Halévy (1802-83), and in 1861 became secretary to the Corps Législatif. With Henri Meilhac he wrote libretti for the best-known operettas of Offenbach, and for Bizet's Carmen, and produced vaudevilles and comedies. His Madame et Monsieur Cardinal (1873) and Les petites Cardinal (1880) are delightful sketches of Parisian theatrical life. Other works include L'Invasion (1872), Criquette (1883, Eng trans 1891), Deux mariages (Un mariage d'amour, 1880, Eng trans Marriage for Love, 1890), Un grand mariage (1883, 'A Grand Marriage'), Princesse (1884) and Mariette (1893).
