Henslowe, Philip c.1550-1616
English theatre manager

Born in Lindfield, Sussex, he was originally a dyer and starch-maker, but became lessee of the Rose Theatre on the Bankside, London, in 1584. From 1591 until his death he was in partnership with Edward Alleyn. Henslowe's business diary from 1593 to 1609, preserved at Dulwich College, was published in 1961 (eds RA Foakes and R T Rickert), and contains invaluable information about the stage of Shakespeare's day.
