Howe, William Howe, 5th Viscount 1729-1814
English soldier
Brother of Richard, 1st Earl Howe, he served under Wolfe at Louisburg (1758) and at Quebec (1759), where he led the famous advance to the Heights of Abraham. In the American Revolution (1776-83) he won the victory at Bunker Hill (1775) and became Commander-in-Chief. Supported from the sea by his sailor-brother, in 1776 he captured Brooklyn, New York, and, after the victory of White Plains, Washington, the following year defeated the Americans at Brandywine Creek. He was replaced by Sir Henry Clinton in 1778 after failure at Valley Forge.
