Isabella II 1830-1904
Queen of Spain

Born in Madrid, she succeeded to the throne on the death of her father, Ferdinand VII (1833), with her mother, Queen María Cristina (1806-78), acting as regent. She attained her majority (1843), and in 1846 married her effete cousin, Francisco de Asis de Bourbon. Although popular with the Spanish people, her scandalous private life made her the tool of rival factions and in 1868 she was deposed and exiled to France, where in 1870 she abdicated in favour of her son, Alfonso XII.
