Janssen, Pierre Jules César 1824-1907
French astronomer

Born in Paris, he became head of the Astrophysical Observatory at Meudon in 1876, and greatly advanced spectrum analysis by his observation of the bright line spectrum of the solar atmosphere (1868). He established an observatory on Mont Blanc, and published a pioneering book of celestial photographs, Atlas de photographies solaires (1904, 'Atlas of Solar Photographs').
