John II, known as John the Good 1319-64
King of France

Born near Le Mans, the son of Philip VI, of Valois, he succeeded his father in 1350. He was taken prisoner by Edward, the Black Prince at Poitiers (1356) and taken to England. After the Treaty of Brétigny (1360), which surrendered most of south-west France to Edward III, he returned home, leaving his second son, the Duke of Anjou, as a hostage. When the duke broke his parole and escaped (1363), John chivalrously returned to London, where he died.
