Jordan, (Ernst) Pascual 1902-80
German theoretical physicist

Born in Hanover, he was educated there and in Göttingen before obtaining a post at the University of Rostock. He was subsequently appointed Professor of Physics at the universities of Berlin (1944-52) and Hamburg (1951-70). He worked with Max Born and Werner Heisenberg, and helped to formulate the theory of quantum mechanics in the matrix representation, showing how light could be interpreted as being composed of discrete quanta of energy. He also contributed to the theories which laid the foundations for the relativistic quantum field theory of electromagnetism, which are now known as quantum electrodynamics.
