Beauharnais, Joséphine de, née Marie Josčphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie 1763-1814
French empress

She was born in Martinique and married (1779) the Vicomte de Beauharnais, who was executed in 1794. Two years later, she married Napoleon I. She accompanied him on his Italian campaign, but soon returned to Paris. At Malmaison, the Palais du Luxembourg and the Tuileries, she attracted the most brilliant society of France, and contributed considerably to the establishment of her husband's power. Their marriage, being childless, was dissolved (1809), but she retained the title of empress. Her children from her first marriage were Eugčne and Hortense de Beauharnais.
