Joubert, Piet (Petrus Jacobus) 1834-1900
Afrikaner soldier and politician

Born in Cango, Cape Colony, he was a farmer in the Transvaal from 1840, and was elected to parliament in 1860, becoming Attorney-General in 1870 and acting President in 1875. In the First Boer War (1880-81) he commanded the Transvaal's forces, and defeated Colley in 1881. He negotiated the Pretoria Convention (1881), became Vice-President in 1883, and opposed Paul Kruger for the presidency. In the Second Boer War (1899-1902) he held command at the outset, but resigned from ill health and died soon afterwards.
