Austrian statesman

He was born in Vienna. He distinguished himself at the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748), and as ambassador at the French court (1750-52). As Chancellor (1753-92), he instigated the Diplomatic Revolution and directed Austrian politics for almost 40 years under Maria Theresa and Joseph II. He was also a liberal patron of arts and sciences.
