Klein, (Christian) Felix 1849-1925
German mathematician

Born in Düsseldorf, he studied at the University of Bonn (1865-68), and became Professor of Mathematics at Erlangen University (1872-75). He later accepted professorships at the universities of Leipzig (1880-86) and Göttingen (1886-1913), where he did much to make Göttingen University the world centre of mathematics. His 'Erlanger Programm' (published 1872) showed how different geometries could be classified in terms of group theory. His subsequent work on geometry included studies of non-Euclidean geometry, function theory and elliptic modular and automorphic functions. An influential teacher and organizer, he encouraged links between pure and applied mathematics and engineering, promoted general mathematical education, and organized the Encyklopädie der Mathematischen Wissenschaften, (23 vols, 1890-1930).
