British film producer

Born in Pusztatúrpáztó, Hungary, he began as a newspaperman in Budapest. He became a film producer there, then in Vienna, Berlin and Hollywood, where he directed for First National, before moving to the UK where he founded London Film Productions and Denham studios (1932). His many films as producer include The Private Life of Henry VIII (1932) which he also directed, Rembrandt (1936), The Thief of Baghdad (1940), The Third Man (1949), The Red Shoes (1948) and Richard III (1956). He was knighted in 1942.
