Laidlaw, William 1780-1845
Scottish poet

Born in Blackhouse, Selkirkshire, he wrote lyrics, but is best known as the friend and copying secretary of Sir Walter Scott, for whom he was also factor at Abbotsford (1817-26). His shepherd for 10 years was James Hogg, and together they helped Scott prepare his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-03).
