Lambert, John 1619-84
English general
He was born in Calton, near Settle, Yorkshire, and studied law before joining the Parliamentary army in the English Civil Wars, commanding Thomas Fairfax's cavalry at Marston Moor in 1641 and participating in several victories, including helping Cromwell defeat the Scots at Preston (1648). He headed the cabal which overthrew Richard Cromwell in 1659, suppressed the Royalist insurrection in Cheshire in August 1659, and virtually governed the country with his officers as the 'committee of safety'. He was sent to the Tower, tried in 1662, and kept prisoner on Drake's Island, Plymouth, until his death.

A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
