Law, (Andrew) Bonar 1858-1923
Scottish statesman

Born in Rexton, New Brunswick, Canada, of Scottish descent, he became an iron merchant in Glasgow, and a Unionist MP from 1900. In 1911 he succeeded Arthur Balfour as Unionist Leader in the House of Commons. He was Colonial Secretary (1915-16), then a member of the War Cabinet, Chancellor of the Exchequer (1916-18), Lord Privy Seal (1919), and from 1916 Leader of the House of Commons. He retired in March 1921, but was recalled to serve as Prime Minister (1922-23), when the Conservatives withdrew from the coalition, forcing David Lloyd George to resign. Law resigned seven months later from ill health and died the same year.
