Layamon fl. early 13th century
English poet and priest

He lived at Ernley (Areley), Worcestershire. In c.1200 he wrote an alliterative verse chronicle, the Brut, a history of England which was an amplified imitation of Robert Wace's Brut d'Angleterre. It is the first poem written in Middle English, and contains the first English versions of the stories of Arthur, Lear, Cymbelene and others.
