Leo I, St, known as the Great c.390-461AD
Italian pope

Born possibly in Tuscany, he was one of only two popes (the other being Gregory I) to take the title 'the Great'. Pope from AD440 to 461, he was one of the most eminent of the Latin Fathers. He summoned the Council of Chalcedon (451), which accepted his doctrine of the Incarnation as defined in his 'Dogmatical Letter'. He made treaties with Attila the Hun (452) and with the Vandals (455) in defence of Rome, and consolidated the primacy of the Roman see.
