Lind, Jenny, originally Johanna Maria Lind 1820-87
Swedish soprano

Born in Stockholm, she went to the court theatre school of singing at the age of nine. After lessons in Paris, she made her debut in Stockholm (1838) and attained international popularity. Known as the 'Swedish nightingale', she founded and endowed musical scholarships and charities in Sweden and in England, where she lived from 1856, and became Professor of Singing at the Royal College of Music (1883-86).
