Lombard, Peter c.1100-1160
Italian theologian

Born near Novara, Lombardy, he studied at Bologna, Rheims, and (under Abelard) at Paris. After holding a chair of theology there, he became Bishop of Paris in 1159. He was generally styled Magister Sententiarum or the 'Master of Sentences', from his collection of sentences from Augustine of Hippo and other Fathers on points of Christian doctrine, with objections and replies. The theological doctors of Paris in 1300 denounced some of his teachings as heretical, but his work was the standard textbook of Catholic theology down to the Reformation.
