Louis VII c.1120-1180
King of France

The second son of Louis VI, he was originally educated for a Church career, but became heir on the death of his brother Philip (1131). In 1137 he became king, married Eleanor of Aquitaine, and continued the consolidation of royal authority begun by his father. He participated in the Second Crusade (1147), and had his marriage annulled (1152), whereupon Eleanor married Henry Plantagenet, Count of Anjou, who became King of England in 1154 as Henry II. Against such a vast mass of power on both sides of the Channel, Louis enlisted papal support and instigated discord within Henry's family.
