Luxembourg, Fran�ois Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville, Duc de 1628-95
French soldier

Born in Paris, he was brought up by his aunt, mother of the Great Cond�. After 1659 he was pardoned by Louis XIV, who made him Duc de Luxembourg (1661). In 1667 he served under Cond� in Franche-Comt�. In 1672 he himself successfully invaded the Netherlands although he was driven back in 1673. During the war he stormed Valenciennes and twice defeated the Prince of Orange. Made a marshal in 1675, soon after the peace (1678) he quarrelled with the Marquis de Louvois, and was not employed for 12 years. In 1690 he commanded in Flanders and defeated the Allies at Fleurus, and later he twice more routed his old opponent, now King William III of Great Britain, at Steinkirk (1692) and Neerwinden (1693).
