Magnus V Erlingsson 1156-84
King of Norway

The son of Earl Erling the Crooked, he became king in 1162 and was raised to the throne, under his father's regency, as a child. In 1164 he was crowned by Archbishop Eystein at a church ceremony in Bergen, the first religious coronation in Norway. After his father's death (1179) he was engaged in a long war against a rival claimant to the throne, the Faroese-born usurper Sverrir Sigurdsson and was forced to flee to Denmark for safety. He died in a naval battle in an attempt to regain his kingdom.
