Malherbe, François de 1555-1628
French poet

Born in Caen, he ingratiated himself with Henri IV, and received a pension. He founded a literary tradition, 'Enfin Malherbe vint', and led his countrymen to disdain the richly-coloured verses of Pierre de Ronsard, and to adopt a clear, refined, but prosaic style. He was an industrious writer, producing odes, songs, epigrams, epistles, translations and criticisms.
