Irish poet

Born in Dublin, the son of a grocer, he worked as a lawyer's clerk, and later found employment in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Although he knew no Irish, he published English versions of Irish poems in The Poets and Poetry of Munster (1849), notably 'My Dark Rosaleen', 'The Nameless One' and 'The Woman of Three Cows'. He also published translations from German poets in Anthologia Germanica (1845).
