Margaret of Valois 1553-1615
Queen of Navarre

Born at St Germain-en-Laye, she was the daughter of Henri II of France and Catherine de Médicis, and sister of Francis II, Charles IX and Henri III. Noted for her beauty, learning and licentiousness, in 1572 she married Henri of Navarre (later Henri IV). The marriage was childless, and was dissolved by the pope (1599) in order to allow Henri to marry Marie de Médicis. She became famous for her Mémoires, published in 1628.
